| Interesting Chevy Facts William Durant envisioned his new company in 1911 as an inexpensive competitor to the Ford Model T. He chose to name the company after its designer, Louis Chevrolet, because he liked the sound of the name and because Chevrolet was a prominent name in motor sports. ----------------------- The Chevy "bowtie" logo appears for the first time. Legend maintains that the bowtie shape was inspired by a pattern of wallpaper in a Paris hotel room. In 1908, William Durant reportedly detached a small piece and kept it in his wallet, waiting for the day he’d put it to use. The bowtie became an advertising icon, and is still the marque of today's Chevrolet. ---------------------- 1927 Chevrolet outsells Ford by topping 1 million units for the first time. In all but four of the next 55 years, Chevrolet is the top-selling American nameplate. ---------------------- 1934 Chevy is first to introduce independent front suspension, which greatly improves ride and handling and reduces tire wear. Roads in America are still rough at this time, so this is a very comforting feature, indeed. ---------------------- 1953 Corvette introduced. The first Corvette appears at the 1953 Motorama, and Chevrolet is besieged with requests for a production version. Many skeptics do not believe Chevrolet will offer such a radical design for mass production. Corvette is the first series-production car with a fiberglass body. ---------------------- 1967 First Camaro SS version paces Indy 500Æ. By now, the pony car phenomenon has captured the country’s imagination and Camaro is right there to grab it. A popular magazine says, ''the youthquake in Detroit has brought a new generation of cars.'' |
| From Baseball, hotdogs, and apple pie to the heartbeat of America, Chevy keeps pace with the changing of America. Over the Last 87 years, Chevrolet has become a part of the American landscape. It's in our songs. It's in our movies. It's in our roads. Maybe that's because Chevrolet has always worked hard to build performance, style and quality into dependable, long-lasting cars that go the distance. Through the years, and across the miles, Chevy's always been there. And wherever America's going...They'll Be There. |
